Leadership Lessons From My Kids Track and Field Journey

Hi Reader

The smell of the fresh cut grass, the palpable anticipation in the air, the thunderous applause as the shot is fired.

I've always loved track and field.

But now, as my kids lace up their sneakers and take their first strides, it has taken on a whole new meaning.

Just as in Leadership, the nurturing of burgeoning talent, the mental toughness, the strategy - it all comes into play on the track.

And critically, the long-term vision.

In track, as in leadership, the finish line is not really the end. It's just a marker on the journey.

As a leader, you're not just running a sprint. You're running a marathon.

Long-term vision is the roadmap that guides your every decision, your every move. It’s the compass that keeps you on track no matter the obstacles in your path.

And like in a marathon, fixating on the short-term can derail your long-term success.

So, how do you keep your eye on the horizon?

  1. Define Your Vision: Paint a vivid picture of your ultimate goal. Inscribe it into your business DNA.
  2. Communicate Your Vision: Share it with every team member. Make them part of the journey. Their buy-in will fuel your progress.
  3. Break It Down: Create short-term goals that align with your vision. Think of them as the milestones on the path to your finish line.

Remember, the journey is not a straight line. It’s a winding path with ups and downs. But with your eyes on the horizon, every step brings you closer to the finish line.

And then, onto the next race.

After all, in leadership... the finish line is just a new beginning.

J. Murray
